JGSPG successfully transitions its Occupational Health and Safety Management System to ISO 45001:2018 standard

JG Summit Petrochemical Corporation (JGSPC) and JG Summit Olefins Corporation (JGSOC) successfully migrated its Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management System to ISO 45001 after an external audit was conducted in May 2021 by certifying body Certification International Philippines, Inc. (CIP).

The ISO 45001:2018 published in 2018 by the International Organization for Standardization gives guidance to organizations to providing safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injury and ill health, assessing safe and health related risks and opportunities towards proactively improving OH&S performance, as well as fulfilling legal and other requirements and achieving OH&S objectives.

With ISO 45001, there is a stronger focus on the organization’s context, shifting its focus to go beyond its own internal health and safety issues, and consider what interested parties expect from the company regarding health and safety. Furthermore, ISO 45001 requires the incorporation of health and safety aspects into the overall management system of the organization, thus driving top management to have a stronger leadership role with respect to the OH&S management system.

Led by its ISO Team and Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Department, JG Summit Petrochemicals Group (JGSPG), collectively made up of JGSPC and JGSOC, underwent more than a year of preparation that started in January 2020 to ensure the success of the initiative. Activities included trainings, gap analysis, consultations, risk assessments, internal audits and management review, prior to the actual external audit held between May 20 and 25, 2021.

JGSPG credits its entire organization for this achievement, from the leadership and full support of its Senior Management and its ISO Steering Committee, the ISO and SHE Teams’ expertise, and the full participation of all employees, amidst a positive mindset for continual improvement of OH&S culture within the company.

For JGSPG, carrying out its operations in a safe manner is part of its mission. Also, integral to JGSPG’s Integrated Management Policy is providing its employees with a safe and a healthy workplace, and providing its host communities with the peace of mind that comes from having a safely operating plant in the neighborhood.

Certification of JGSPG’s OH&S Management System to the ISO 45001:2018 standard is an important milestone to keeping its commitments to its employees and the community.

ISO 45001:2018 is complementary in structure to the Quality Management System under ISO 9001:2015 and the Environmental Management System under ISO 14001:2015, which both JGSPC and JGSOC are also certified to. The three standards comprise JGSPG’s Integrated Management System, which helps guide the JGSPG organization to work as a cohesive unit with unified quality, safety and environmental management objectives. Prior to ISO 45001:2018, JGSPG’s OH&S Management System was certified to OHSAS 18001:2007.

The transition of JGSPG’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System to ISO 45001:2018 standard was spearheaded by its Safety, Health and Environment Department and ISO Team.
Trainings, such as this high angle rescue exercise, are an important component of ISO 45001 towards providing a safe and healthy workplace to prevent work-related injury.
To promote OH&S among employees, part of the company-wide “SHE is Life” program is an ongoing campaign through infographics on health and safety.
